My grandmother was a crafter. She knit, she crocheted, she sewed, she painted and she worked with plastic canvas. There were many challenges in her life. She had four children and worked hard in a hosiery factory. But by the time I came along, she was retired and had much more time for her crafting and her family.

She doted on her grandchildren. When my mother was pregnant with me, she knitted dozens of little sweaters and hats. Only one set was blue because even though she was absolutely convinced I would be a girl she was prudent enough to have a backup.

My sister and I both wore her hand knits and many of them survived to be worn by my own kids. One of these was a little bonnet. It’s a precious, lacy, little thing that is absolutely adorable but not exactly practical for a winter baby. My son was born in January in the mountains. He needed something more substantial than a lacy bonnet.

Jean’s Bonnet is my reimagining of my grandmother’s knitting. I like to think that she would approve of my winter baby wrapped in wool, even if it wasn’t knit by her hardworking hands.
